What is the new shif in Kenya?

What is SHIF? The new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) mandates that all Kenyans contribute to a unified health fund. The government will provide additional financial assistance to vulnerable individuals and those unable to make contributions.

Is shif the same as NHIF?

The Ministry of Health has announced that, starting 1 October 2024, employers must transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), with clear guidance provided on the process. The SHIF was introduced through the Social Health Insurance Act, the Primary Health Care Act, and the Digital Health Act, which came into effect on 22 November 2023. Employers are required to deduct 2.75% from each employee's gross salary as their SHIF contribution, beginning with the October 2024 payroll.

When is the deadline for submiting SHIF contributions?

The deadline for remitting SHIF contributions is on the 9th Day of the following month. For example remitting the returns for income earned in the month of October will be due by the 9th of November.
